Soups
Fresh Chinese Yam, Pumpkin and Corn with Lean Pork Soup
Traditionally used to help support blood sugar regulation and benefit people managing diabetes
Why people make this soup
Diabetes cannot be cured, but careful dietary management can help reduce symptom severity and slow the development of complications. People who stay disciplined with both their diet and their medication can live well, healthy lives.
Fresh Chinese yam contains mucilaginous proteins believed to help protect blood vessel walls, maintain vascular elasticity and resist arterial hardening. It also contains dopamine and batatasine compounds that research suggests may benefit insulin metabolism and support blood sugar balance. Paired with pumpkin — which contains cobalt, a mineral associated with increased insulin release and reduced blood sugar — and corn (especially with its silk, which has a traditional diuretic and blood-sugar-lowering reputation), this soup makes for a genuinely supportive daily meal.
Who it suits / who should be cautious
- Suitable for people managing diabetes, as well as those looking to maintain healthy blood sugar levels
- Safe for most ages; the naturally sweet flavour makes it appealing even for family members without diabetes
- Choose the elongated variety of pumpkin rather than the round type — the round variety tends to have a higher sugar content
Why these ingredients (the food-therapy logic)
- Fresh Chinese yam (xian huai shan): Contains mucilaginous proteins that protect blood vessel walls; the compounds dopamine and batatasine are associated with supporting insulin regulation and blood sugar balance
- Pumpkin (nan gua): Rich in cobalt, a trace mineral associated with stimulating insulin release; traditionally used in food therapy to help lower blood sugar
- Corn with silk (su mi xian): The corn itself provides gentle nourishment; the silk (the thread-like strands at the top) has a notable traditional reputation for promoting diuresis and supporting blood sugar regulation — include it for the full benefit
- Lean pork (shou rou): Provides protein and gives body to the broth without adding excess fat
Ingredients (4 bowls)
| Ingredient | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh Chinese yam | 1 stick (300–400 g) | Peel and cut into chunks |
| Pumpkin | 300 g | Peel and cut into chunks; elongated variety preferred |
| Sweet corn (with silk) | 2 ears | Remove outer leaves; rinse; include silk; cut into sections |
| Lean pork | 300 g | Cut into pieces; blanch briefly |
Method
- Peel the Chinese yam and pumpkin; cut both into large chunks.
- Remove the outer leaves from the corn ears, rinse well — keep the silk on — and cut into sections.
- Cut the lean pork into pieces and blanch in boiling water for 2–3 minutes; rinse.
- Place all ingredients into a pot with 8 bowls (approximately 1.9 litres) of water.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce to a medium simmer for about 1.5 hours until reduced to 4 bowls.
- Serve; eat the solid ingredients as well as drinking the soup.
Bro Niu’s tips
This soup is naturally sweet and delicious — the whole family will enjoy it regardless of whether anyone has diabetes. For pumpkin, the elongated variety is recommended because the round type tends to have a higher sugar content, which is a consideration for people monitoring blood glucose. The corn silk is a key functional ingredient for blood sugar support — do not discard it. Young corn on the cob with silk intact is even more effective than ordinary sweet corn ears.
