Wild Honeysuckle Flower Topical Wash
Traditionally used to soothe heat rash and eczema in infants and children
Why people make this wash
In hot and humid weather, babies and young children are especially prone to heat rash and eczema because their sweat glands are still developing, and sweat can easily become trapped in skin folds — the neck, elbow creases, groin, and back. Parents are often unsure whether a patch of red bumps is heat rash or eczema, but in traditional Chinese household care, a simple honeysuckle flower wash is used for both, because the flower’s anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-itch properties address the underlying cause rather than just the surface symptom. Bro Niu uses the wild variety (which has leaves and flowers mixed, and is more aromatic) for a stronger effect, but ordinary dried honeysuckle works well too.
Who it suits / who should be cautious
- Suitable as an external wash for infants and children with heat rash, eczema, or minor skin inflammation; adults can also use this wash
- Children with G6PD deficiency (favism) must NOT use honeysuckle at all — it can trigger haemolytic anaemia. Use dandelion and wild chrysanthemum wash instead
- This is an EXTERNAL WASH ONLY in this recipe — do not give to children as a drink unless under the guidance of a practitioner
Why these ingredients (the food-therapy logic)
- Wild honeysuckle flowers (jin yin hua, Lonicera japonica): One of the most widely used cooling, detoxifying herbs in Chinese medicine. Research supports its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory activity. The wild-harvested variety is considered particularly potent
Ingredients (4 bowls of wash solution)
| Ingredient | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wild honeysuckle flowers (jin yin hua) | 5 qian (~19 g) | Rinse; regular honeysuckle works too |
Method
- Rinse the honeysuckle flowers briefly.
- Place in a pot with 5 bowls (~1 L) of water.
- Bring to a boil, then simmer for about 15 minutes, reducing to approximately 4 bowls.
- Strain out all the flowers. Allow to cool to a comfortable temperature (below 40°C — warm but not hot).
- Using a cotton ball or soft gauze, dab the wash gently onto the affected areas of skin.
- There is no need to rinse off with plain water afterward.
- Apply 3 times per day.
Bro Niu’s tips
The wild honeysuckle pictured has both leaves and open and unopened flowers mixed together after drying — this is normal and a sign of authenticity. Wild varieties are more fragrant and potent; cultivated varieties are lighter in scent but still effective. Make sure the wash liquid is not too hot before applying to a baby’s skin — below 40°C is safe. After applying, you can follow with a mild baby moisturising lotion. Adults with skin inflammation or insect bites can also use this wash. Fresh honeysuckle flowers can be brewed similarly — just steep a small handful in hot water for 5 minutes.

Q (匿名访客): If a child has G6PD deficiency and has heat rash or eczema, what suitable external wash can be used? Bro Niu: G6PD children can use dandelion (pu gong ying) and wild chrysanthemum (ye ju hua), 5 qian each, boiled in water for 7–8 minutes, applied 3 times a day as an external wash.
-
Q (Beatrice Wong): How much honeysuckle for a 4-month-old baby? How many days can it be used? Bro Niu: Five qian of honeysuckle for the external wash is fine. The main purpose is to reduce inflammation and prevent the eczema from worsening. Make sure to keep the skin dry by gently patting away sweat, and a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline) can be applied afterward.

Q (文): Is “tu yin hua” (wild honeysuckle) better than regular honeysuckle? Can it be combined with xia ku cao for the wash? Bro Niu: Wild honeysuckle has stronger heat-clearing and detoxifying effect but is also more cooling — so it is very appropriate as an external wash. For internal use by children, ordinary honeysuckle is preferred. Combining with xia ku cao for the wash is also fine.
