Carrot and Red Date Water

Why people make this drink

Any parent who has lived through weeks of a child’s stubborn cough knows the exhaustion of it — the broken nights, the worry, the frustration when no remedy seems to work for long. This carrot and red date water is one of Bro Niu’s first-choice suggestions precisely because it has two things going for it that most herbal teas do not: it tastes genuinely nice, and children will usually drink it willingly.

Carrot is rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A — a nutrient essential for the health of mucous membranes lining the respiratory tract. Research also suggests that vitamin A plays a role in immune defence. Red dates contain a compound called cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) that is thought to have antihistamine-like effects, potentially reducing the allergic mediators that trigger coughing in sensitive airways. Together, the two make a pleasant, mildly sweet drink that supports the lungs and immunity without being harsh or medicinal.

Who it suits / who should be cautious

  • Suitable for: children and adults with a persistent post-cold cough, whooping cough, or allergic cough — as long as the mucus, if any, is clear or white
  • Give infants small amounts according to their age and tolerance; no fixed volume is required
  • Not suitable when mucus is thick, yellow, or sticky — this indicates a heat pattern; hold this drink until the infection is clearly resolving

Why these ingredients (the food-therapy logic)

  • Carrot (hong luo bo): Provides beta-carotene, vitamins C and B group, and various minerals; traditionally valued for protecting the respiratory tract, improving immunity, and supporting children’s growth; also considered to have a mild anti-allergic effect
  • Red dates (hong zao): Traditionally used to protect the liver, build qi and blood, and calm the mind; the cAMP compound they contain is associated in traditional practice with reducing allergy-triggered symptoms

Ingredients (2 bowls)

IngredientAmountNotes
Carrot1 mediumPeeled, sliced thin
Red dates8–10 piecesPitted, sliced
Water4 bowls (~800 mL)

Method

  1. Wash and peel the carrot; slice into thin rounds.
  2. Pit the red dates and slice them.
  3. Place both ingredients in a small pot with 4 bowls of water.
  4. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 30 minutes until the liquid reduces to about 2 bowls.
  5. Serve warm. Children may drink freely according to their age and tolerance. Suitable for the whole family.

Bro Niu’s tips

This drink is naturally sweet and easy for children to accept. Young infants should receive only a small amount — there is no need to give a fixed volume; let the child’s tolerance guide you. One important caution: if the cough comes with thick, yellow, or sticky phlegm, this is a sign of heat and this drink is not suitable. Hold off until the heat clears. If you want to add extra cough-clearing action, add one-sixth of a dried monk fruit (luo han guo) to the pot — it also helps reduce phlegm.

Community questions answered (selected)

  • Q (Mandy, whose 10-year-old has had recurrent phlegmy cough for about a year, with allergic airways): Can she drink this? She seems to be spleen-deficient and always has phlegm. Bro Niu: You can add one-sixth of a dried monk fruit (luo han guo) to the pot — it helps clear phlegm. Try 3–4 servings and see if there is improvement.

  • Q (Wing Kwan, whose 2.5-year-old developed a severe cough with vomiting after a fever): He cannot bring up phlegm and has no appetite. What can I give him? Bro Niu: Try cooking snow pear (1 piece, cored), northern apricot kernels (bei xing, 3 qian), dried tangerine peel (1 piece), and one dried tangerine cake (jie bing, chopped) in 5 bowls of water until reduced to 2 bowls. Give over 3 servings.

  • Q (rain1986, whose 4-year-old has had allergic cough recurring since December, worsening at night): She was given bronchodilator medication but it keeps coming back after stopping. Night sweating from the medication, poor sleep — what can help? Bro Niu: Fritillaria bulb powder (chuan bei mo, 3 qian), 1 apple peeled and cored, dried tangerine peel (1 piece) — cook in 4 bowls of water for 20 minutes. For the night sweating caused by the medication, separately make a drink with floating wheat (fu xiao mai, 5 qian), black soybeans (1 liang), red dates (6 pieces, pitted) in 5 bowls of water — simmer to 2 bowls. This is mild enough to use as a regular drink for several days.
